On his birthday, Walter Sparrow, an amiable dog-catcher, takes a call that leaves him dog bit and late to pick up his wife. She’s browsed in a bookstore, finding a blood-red-covered novel, a murder mystery with numerology that loops constantly around the number 23. The story captivates Walter: he dreams it, he notices aspects of his life that can be rendered by “23,” he searches for the author, he stays in the hotel (in room 23) where events in the novel took place, and he begins to believe it was no novel. Even the biggest fans of Halle Berry and her beautiful body are going to be hard-pressed to find much to enjoy about Perfect Stranger, a perfectly bland thriller co-starring Bruce Willis and the go-to guy for funky/creepy characters - Giovanni Ribisi. Loaded with close-ups of Berry’s lovely face caught in a deer in the headlights stare, an overabundance of boring shots of computer screens filled with sexually teasing text, and a batch of potential murder suspects we couldn’t care less about, Perfect Stranger is a pushy film that tries to accomplish way too much and doesn’t achieve anything.

January releases usually fall into two categories: the Oscar contenders who are getting their wide release after playing in a handful of LA and New York theaters, or movies the studios don’t have much faith in and want to quietly push out early in the year just to get it over with. Guess which category “Hide and Seek” belongs to? No one will be mentioning this movie and ‘award’ in the same sentence unless it earns the dubious distinction of being included in the 2005 Razzies celebrating the worst movies of the year.

Susie’s husband is asked to hold a doll for a woman as they get off an airplane. She disappears. Mike and Carlino are small time hoods who find the woman’s body in Susie’s apartment, placed there by her partner, Harry Rote. Susie’s blindness is the key to them searching the apartment for the doll that contains smuggled drugs. Mike pretends to be an old friend of Susie’s husband while her husband is away and together the crooks invent a story of a police investigation of her husband that only the discovery of the now missing doll can save him from. Rote is a killer, and his stalking of Susie becomes more and more obvious as the story unfolds, leaving us with the question, how does a blind woman defend herself?
