I loved the trailer and video clips from “Saw,” so my expectations were relatively high going into the screening. Prepared for a gory good time, I wanted to like “Saw.” I wanted it to make me squirm, make me hide my eyes, and just get lost in a gross-out horror/thriller. But what I couldn’t have prepared myself for was just how horrific “Saw” turned out to be. And that’s not a compliment.

John Singleton said he wanted to make a movie with a distinctly Western tone and with “Four Brothers,” Singleton’s accomplished just that. The movie’s contemporary urban setting could easily be encased in a time capsule and sent back to the days of the Wild West and it would seem right at home.

The best thing I can say about “Timeline” is that it’s filled with some of the finest male eye candy on screen (only adding Colin Farrell or Ewan McGregor would have topped the team of Gerard Butler and Paul Walker). Now that’s not to put down the acting ability of Butler or even Walker, it just speaks to the truth of the matter: without something pleasant to look at, I would have lost interest in “Timeline” before the end of the first hour. As it was, Butler and Walker provided enough testosterone to at least keep me from completely tuning out of this sadly unfulfilling screen adaptation of Michael Crichton’s bestseller.

On his birthday, Walter Sparrow, an amiable dog-catcher, takes a call that leaves him dog bit and late to pick up his wife. She’s browsed in a bookstore, finding a blood-red-covered novel, a murder mystery with numerology that loops constantly around the number 23. The story captivates Walter: he dreams it, he notices aspects of his life that can be rendered by “23,” he searches for the author, he stays in the hotel (in room 23) where events in the novel took place, and he begins to believe it was no novel. If you’re attacked by a violent criminal bent on making your life a living hell, the first thing to do is call the cops. It doesn’t matter what you were doing, or who you were doing it to, at the time of the crime. Make the call. That’s the lesson learned by Clive Owen’s character in the thriller, “Derailed,” adapted from a James Siegel novel by Stuart Beattie (“Collateral”) and directed by Mikael Hafstrom.
