Nim’s Island (2008)Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 |
A feisty young girl fights off cruise ship passengers in funky attire, dances with a sea lion, and hangs out with lizards in the family adventure film Nim’s Island based on the book by Wendy Orr. Walden Media’s latest entry in the kid-friendly film business delivers mild laughs but fails to enchant the audience the way the book’s been doing to young readers since it was published in 1999.
The film version of Nim’s Island is pretty as a postcard and just as deep. The human and animal stars are, of course, adorable, but anyone over the age of 10 may have a hard time staying awake or involved throughout this family romp. |
12 Angry Men (1957)Thursday, June 5th, 2008 |
The defence and the prosecution have rested and the jury is filing into the jury room to decide if a young Spanish-American is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. What begins as an open and shut case of murder soon becomes a mini-drama of each of the jurors’ prejudices and preconceptions about the trial, the accused, and each other. Based on the play, all of the action takes place on the stage of the jury room. Written by pjk {PETESID@VNET.IBM.COM} |
Stranger Than Fiction (2006)Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 |
What sounds like an excellent set-up for a movie turns out to be just another run of the mill, disappointingly mediocre comedy. Directed by Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Stay) and starring Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman, Stranger Than Fiction takes the idea of a man facing his impending death at the whim of a British writer and instead of running with it, casually swaggers to a predictable finish. |

Mary Poppins (1964)Monday, April 14th, 2008 |
The movie combines a diverting story, songs, color and sequences of live action blended with the movements of animated figures. Mary Poppins is a kind of Super-nanny who flies in with her umbrella in response to the request of the Banks children and proceeds to put things right with the aid of her rather extraordinary magical powers before flying off again. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 |
The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie took audiences by storm and had kids and adults alike uttering happy arghhhs along with the film’s highly likeable cast. A pirate’s life was tremendously appealing as long as Johnny Depp’s androgynous Captain Jack Sparrow was in charge.

Hot Fuzz (2007)Friday, March 21st, 2008 |
The twisted minds behind the 2004 zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead take on the world of Hollywood action movies with Hot Fuzz, an outrageously funny film directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Loaded with laughs, Hot Fuzz is so good you’ll need to see it twice just to catch what you missed the first time around.
