Will Seth Green hook up with a hairy-legged tree hugger? Will Matthew Lillard come to his senses and figure out he’s in what might be the best relationship of his life? Are either of these questions really important? No. Nothing much matters other than going for as many gross-out laughs as possible in “Without a Paddle,” a weird buddy road trip comedy that has a definite “Deliverance” quality to it.

If the world’s not tired of Tom Cruise, then “War of the Worlds” should do spectacular business at the box office. Cruise’s recent attention-grabbing engagement to Katie Holmes and his desire to talk about Scientology at every possible opportunity have turned a few people off. But will that stop the majority of moviegoers from checking out his latest collaboration with Steven Spielberg? Probably not. And that’s a darn good thing as “War of the Worlds” is immensely entertaining.

This movie features a character who is supposed to be the descendant of the character played Steve McQueen in the television series of the same name. And like McQueen’s Josh Randall, Hauer’s Nick Randall is also a bounty. But also an ex-CIA operative, who is asked by his former employer to help them track down a terrorrist, Malak Al Rahim, who is in the country, and has already made a move. What you’ve heard is true. The last 30 minutes of The Kingdom are incredibly intense. Bullets fly at a frantic pace and director Peter Berg’s in your face style and fast cutting put you in the center of the action. The final shootout is so realistic you may feel the need to bob and weave away from the bullets, even though you know you’re sitting safely in a darkened theater and it’s just a movie. Feel free to dodge away.

The best thing I can say about “Timeline” is that it’s filled with some of the finest male eye candy on screen (only adding Colin Farrell or Ewan McGregor would have topped the team of Gerard Butler and Paul Walker). Now that’s not to put down the acting ability of Butler or even Walker, it just speaks to the truth of the matter: without something pleasant to look at, I would have lost interest in “Timeline” before the end of the first hour. As it was, Butler and Walker provided enough testosterone to at least keep me from completely tuning out of this sadly unfulfilling screen adaptation of Michael Crichton’s bestseller.
