The Rock emerges as a viable action movie star with his role as a bounty hunter on the verge of retirement in Peter Berg’s action comedy “The Rundown.” Expectations weren’t exactly high after his starring turn in the critically panned prequel to “The Mummy,” “The Scorpion King.” But under Peter Berg’s direction in “The Rundown,” The Rock is able to show off a decent set of acting chops. Even more surprising is the fact that even when he’s not kicking some bad guy’s butt, he’s still extremely believable and entertaining to watch. Believe it or not, after “The Rundown,” you can now add drama and comedy to the list of genres The Rock is capable of tackling.

Van Damme plays Rudy whose father, Oscar is an archaeologist. His father goes to Israel. When his father disappears, he goes to Israel to find him. The chief of police claims that his father never entered the country, but an old friend of his father’s was expecting him and before he could tell him more, some people start shooting at them. He manages to get away, and when he goes back to the police chief, he still refuses to believe that a crime has been committed. A wave of kidnappings has swept through Mexico, feeding a growing sense of panic among its wealthier citizens, especially parents. In one six-day period, there were twenty-four abductions, leading many to hire bodyguards for their children. Into this world enters John Creasy, a burned-out ex-CIA operative/assassin, who has given up on life. Creasy’s friend Rayburn brings him to Mexico City to be a bodyguard to nine-year-old Pita Ramos, daughter of industrialist Samuel Ramos and his wife Lisa. Creasy is not interested in being a bodyguard, especially to a youngster, but for lack of something better to do, he accepts the assignment. Creasy barely tolerates the precocious child and her pestering questions about him and his life. But slowly, she chips away at his seemingly impenetrable exterior, his defenses drop, and he opens up to her. Creasy’s new-found purpose in life is shattered when Pita is kidnapped.
