Numerous New York City-dwellers come to the exclusive club Shortbus to work out problems in their sexual relationships. Rob and Sophia are a happily married couple, except for the fact that she has never experienced sexual climax. This irony follows her to work, because she is a couples counselor who frequently has to deal with the sexual issues other couples have. Two of her patients are Jamie and James, a gay couple who have been monogamous for five years and counting. James wants to bring other men in to the relationship, and his own history with depression may hint at an ulterior motive. Ceth (Pronounced like Seth) may be the perfect addition to their family, but Caleb, a voyeur from across the street, may have his own ideas about that. Directed by Roger Donaldson (The Recruit, World’s Fastest Indian) from a screenplay by Ian Lafrenais and Dick Clement (the team behind Across the Universe and The Commitments), The Bank Job allows the audience an inside peek at an event covered up by those Brits with the power to hush up things that might cause the Royals to get their regal panties in an uproar. Although some of the story may not connect with American audiences (unless you happen to be up on the intricacies of the British police and government), the can of worms opened up by the bank robbers is easy enough to sift through no matter what your nationality. Studios are lucky ticket buyers haven’t organized and made a stand against $100 million-budgeted chunks of garbage.
