A lethal virus spreads throughout the British isles,infecting millions and killing hundreds of thousands. This witty tale of a young woman who’s the victim of an age-old family curse may sound like a chick flick but, truthfully, the humor, production design, and cast make this a film even guys can sit through without too much fidgeting. It’s fresh and fun, and while the lesson of the story isn’t subtle, it’s not so distracting as to make the film annoyingly preachy. The message is clothed in clever dialogue so while the film’s straightforward storyline is a simple one, Penelope manages to be entertaining even while pounding you over the head with its “I’m okay with myself” hammer.

A remake of the 1974 horror movie Black Christmas. The movie tells the story about Billy, a young boy who was abused by his mother as a child. While his mother was cheating on Billy’s father, she eventually killed his father and kept Billy in the attic - for good, while she was with her lover and starting a “new” family. As Billy’s mother fell pregnant with a daughter and treated her with love, which Billy had never experienced with his mother, Billy came out of the attic after years and brutally murdered his mother and her lover. Unfortunately the San Diego press wasn’t offered the opportunity to view the film in the IMAX format, but I can say the 3-D digital version screened for the media in my area (and on which I’m basing my review) was beyond gorgeous. 3-D’s never been one of my personal favorite formats, but Robert Zemeckis’ spectacular achievements have turned me into a real believer in the beauty of performance capture and 3-D.
