Paul Greengrass has crafted one of the most difficult films to sit through with his intense and unforgettable drama, United 93, a film which details the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. Using mostly unknown actors and without inserting a political agenda into the picture, Greengrass has managed to create a taut, extraordinarily haunting film that not only recreates but also honors the last hours in the lives of the passengers and crew aboard the doomed United Airlines Flight 93.

I, Robot (2004)Wednesday, September 19th, 2007 |
|
I’ve already established in previous reviews I’m not a comic book person (see “The Hulk,” “Spider-Man,” “Hellboy,” etc.). The same lack of knowledge of the source material extends to sci-fi films. I think I read Isaac Asimov years ago, but it didn’t stick with me. I didn’t know there were three laws robots must obey, and the title “I, Robot” reminded me more of a “Me, Tarzan, You, Jane”-type of thing than anything else. |
Smokin’ Aces (2007)Sunday, August 26th, 2007 |
|
The Bottom LineThe second film from the decidedly warped imagination of writer/director Joe Carnahan is every bit as edgy as Narc, his critically acclaimed debut film. Carnahan’s Smokin’ Aces is a fast-paced, twisting, complicated thriller/dark comedy loaded with graphic violence and filled with some of the most interesting characters imaginable.Smokin’ Aces is outrageous and just goes for it, and it’s definitely not for those who don’t enjoy seeing blood and body parts splattered all over the screen. For those who like their films heavy on guts and gore, Smokin’ Aces delivers the bloody goods in spades.

Susie’s husband is asked to hold a doll for a woman as they get off an airplane. She disappears. Mike and Carlino are small time hoods who find the woman’s body in Susie’s apartment, placed there by her partner, Harry Rote. Susie’s blindness is the key to them searching the apartment for the doll that contains smuggled drugs. Mike pretends to be an old friend of Susie’s husband while her husband is away and together the crooks invent a story of a police investigation of her husband that only the discovery of the now missing doll can save him from. Rote is a killer, and his stalking of Susie becomes more and more obvious as the story unfolds, leaving us with the question, how does a blind woman defend herself?
