After a plane crash in the ocean, a group of military students reach an island. Ralph organizes the boys, assigning responsibilities for each one. When the rebel Jack Merridew neglects the fire camp and they lose the chance to be seen by a helicopter, the group split under the leadership of Jack. While Ralph rationalizes the procedures, Jack returns to the primitivism, using the fear for the unknown (in a metaphor to the religion) to control the other boys, and hunting and chasing pigs, stealing the possession of Ralph’s group and even killing people. Tyrants - Monsters - Heroes - Ear Wax.

This is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in years. It’s also one of the sweetest romances. Who would have thought that a huge, ugly, bug-eating, tube-eared, gassy green ogre could be so loveable? Mike Myers voice was the perfect match for this animated creature, though personally I believe Eddie Murphy stole the show with his Donkey doings.

Kevin Spacey’s name is being tossed about once again as a potential Best Actor Academy Award nominee. With a plethora of outstanding performances from leading men this year, it’s tough to handicap the upcoming race. Spacey’s impressive repertoire of films outshines most of his probable competitions’, but does he deserve a nomination for “The Shipping News?” I’m going to have to hesitantly say, in my opinion, no.
