Robert Luketic took a break from romantic comedies (the genre where he’s been most comfortable) to direct 21, an entertaining, while not completely comprehensible, dramatic movie adapted from Ben Mezrich’s book, Bringing Down the House. Loosely based on the true story of a group of MIT students who made a killing counting cards at Vegas casinos, 21 makes playing blackjack look not only exciting, but profitable. Despite a few gaping plot holes, the card action and engaging cast make this film fun for even those of us who’ve had only losing experiences at blackjack tables. (more…)

After unexpectedly unleashing an ancient curse, they find themselves battling hordes of skeletal warriors who were once associates of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado.

Directed by Roger Donaldson (The Recruit, World’s Fastest Indian) from a screenplay by Ian Lafrenais and Dick Clement (the team behind Across the Universe and The Commitments), The Bank Job allows the audience an inside peek at an event covered up by those Brits with the power to hush up things that might cause the Royals to get their regal panties in an uproar. Although some of the story may not connect with American audiences (unless you happen to be up on the intricacies of the British police and government), the can of worms opened up by the bank robbers is easy enough to sift through no matter what your nationality. Remember six months ago when that first shaky cam trailer for an untitled JJ Abrams production hit theaters in front of Transformers and then, shortly after, the internet? The buzz was deafening. That first quick teaser trailer opened with a bunch of people at a party and then ended with the Statue of Liberty’s head in the middle of a New York street. That teaser generated an immense amount of interest and a lot of head-scratching. No title, no director, just the release date… What the heck was this thing JJ Abrams created and why the secrecy surrounding even the movie’s title?
