I liked that movie, but I love the original “What Rats Won’t Do” (1998) with James Frain, Natascha McElhone, and, surprise! surprise! Parker Posey. In that movie the attraction is much more logical and real. I recommend it with all my heart. Written by V Petrova

The successful drug dealer Mr. X plans his criminal career intermediating business with drugs without calling the attention, working with a small gang and honoring his payments with the suppliers. On the day planned for his early retirement, the powerful mobster Jimmy Price gives two assignments to him: find Charlie, the addicted daughter of his associate Eddie Temple and negotiate um million pills of high-quality ecstasy with the stupid smalltime gangster Duke. Mr. X hires two acquaintances crooks in a night-club to find Charlie, and he unexpectedly meets Duke’s cousin Sidney with his sexy girlfriend Tammy and flirts with her. But Mr. X discovers that the ecstasy was stolen from the dangerous and wild Serbian drug lord Dragan that wants the head of Duke and the drugs back. Do you ever feel like everyone but you is in on the joke? I didn’t feel that way with Wes Anderson’s other films – “Bottle Rocket,” “Rushmore,” or the amazing “Royal Tenenbaums.” Those films were clever but never condescending. Those I understood and basically stood in awe of. But from the title to the bizarre action sequences, “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” left me feeling like an outsider looking in.

Timon and Pumbaa start to watch the original Lion King movie, but Timon keeps insisting to fast forward to when they come in, because they weren’t seen in the beginning of the story or anywhere until halfway through. Pumbaa suggests telling the audience their story, which begins before Simba’s journey begins. Through this, we meet Timon’s mother and Uncle Max, discover why he left his meerkat colony, where he learned Hakuna Matata, how he meets Pumbaa, and the perils they encountered while searching for their dream home. “Little Black Book” is truly the most schizophrenic movie I’ve had the agony of sitting through. My head was spinning (not literally, thank you very much) as the movie wildly ricocheted from being a comedy to a drama to a feel-good self-exploration film to an indictment of TV talk shows to a misguided statement on technology and dating. The problem with something like this that’s so disjointed, something that tries to be too many things, is that it never connects on any one level. It’s like watching eight movies spliced together by a sadistic editor who loves to make audiences squirm in discomfort.
