In London, after investigating crack addicted junkies for an article in her newspaper, the journalist Amy Klein (Kari Wuhrer) watches a bizarre videotape. Her editor Charles Richmond (Simon Kunz) received the footage of an underground group of youngsters in Bucharest apparently becoming zombies through the power of their leader Winter (Paul Rhys) from a member, Marla (Georgina Rylance), and invites Amy to prepare the story. Amy accepts the challenge, and once in Romania, she finds Marla dead with a puzzle cube in her hands. She brings the object to her hotel room, and opens it, beginning her journey to hell. Attractive 20-somethings make bad decisions, wear minimal clothing, have sex at the most inappropriate times, check out creepy buildings they have no business being anywhere near, and fail to flee (or even call 911) when they know a killer wants them dead. Yep, “House of Wax” officially qualifies as a by-the-book teen horror film. There’s nothing new to see here so can we all just move along please?

On July 4th, in the small Broken Ridge, Colorado, the teenagers Colby, his girlfriend Amber and their friends Zoe, Roger and PJ play a prank with the legend of the Fisherman that kills teenagers with dirty little secrets with his hook in an entertaining park. However, when PJ jumps with his skateboard, there is an unexpected accident and PJ dies. The group stays together and makes a covenant to keep their secret. I’ve already established in previous reviews I’m not a comic book person (see “The Hulk,” “Spider-Man,” “Hellboy,” etc.). The same lack of knowledge of the source material extends to sci-fi films. I think I read Isaac Asimov years ago, but it didn’t stick with me. I didn’t know there were three laws robots must obey, and the title “I, Robot” reminded me more of a “Me, Tarzan, You, Jane”-type of thing than anything else.
