The Story
Tristan (Cox) adores the high-maintenance beauty, Victoria (Miller), and promises her the moon (well, actually a fallen star) in exchange for her hand. But in order to obtain the fallen star Tristan must leave the city he’s always known and cross the wall into a magical kingdom.
Once outside his hometown, Tristan discovers the star is really a girl named Yvaine (Danes) and getting her to agree to travel with him back to the lovely Victoria isn’t going to be as easy as he originally anticipated. As the twosome make their way through the fairy tale land they’re pursued by a wicked witch (Pfeiffer) who wants to cut out Yvaine’s heart. The surviving sons of a recently deceased king also chase Tristan and Yvaine through the countryside in order to try and get Yvaine’s necklace. Whichever heir to the kingdom is able to get his hands on that particular necklace will be crowned the country’s new ruler. As if witches and princes aren’t enough, the pair find themselves aboard a pirate ship packed with scalawags who deal in black market items.
The Cast
Pfeiffer’s delicious take on the classic wicked witch is enchanting. De Niro’s hilarious and delightfully over the top as a flamboyant pirate who can out sashay Johnny Depp’s Captain Sparrow. The entire supporting cast is top notch as are the film’s lead actors - Charlie Cox and Claire Danes. Their chemistry works and they have just the right amount of playfulness in their performances to help bring the fantasy world of Neil Gaiman alive onscreen.
To Sum It Up
Stardust is a spellbinding comedy that’s just plain fun. A fantasy fairy tale for adults who still believe in all things magical, Stardust is a terrific escapist comedy wrapped up in pretty, eye-pleasing packaging.
